The lodge has stylish rooms with en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, and Wi-Fi, while hearty, traditional meals are served in the lodge restaurant. Surrounded by peaceful gardens and backed by an attentive, welcoming service, Umbhaba Eco Lodge gives guests an indulgent and genuinely authentic place to stay during their Kruger Park safari.

Day 1: Johannesburg to Hazyview and Sunset/Night Safari

After a smooth trip from the city, we’ll arrive at the lodge in Hazyview just before midday, with enough time for you to unpack and settle into your room, before having a refreshing light lunch.

There’s enough time to cool off in the pool, wander along peaceful walking trails, or simply sit back and soak in the sounds of nature drifting all around you, before we set out on your very first game drive.

As the heat retreats and the sky begins to glow with the first signs of sunset, we leave the lodge, at around 15:45 pm, for a Sunset/Night Safari inside the legendary Kruger National Park.

If you are travelling in winter, the longer nights will give you more time to search for nocturnal wildlife while in summer you’ll be treated to one of the most spectacular sunsets you’ll ever see, made all the better with the evening sounds of the bush.

We’ll return to the lodge at around 20:00 pm, where a delicious dinner and a restful night await.

Day 2: Full Day Open Vehicle Safari in the Kruger National Park

With the smell of coffee and an excitable sense of anticipation in the air, we’re up early and driving to the Kruger well before day break.

This time of the day is when the bush is most alive, and being in the park early will give you the best chance to spot the Big 5 and watch plains game moving through the cool morning air. It’s not unusual to spot something right as we enter the park.

We’ll spend the first three hours exploring the park, as the sun rises higher and higher into the sky.

Then, midway through the morning, we’ll stop at a rest camp or picnic spot so you can enjoy your lodge packed breakfast, stretch your legs, sip a hot coffee, and take in the beauty of the wilderness around you before we continue with our morning drive.

Around midday, we stop at a rest camp for lunch (at your own expense).

There’s time to browse the shops, or simply cool off with an ice-cold beer or ice cream, while exploring the camp or sitting on the deck, watching the river, dam or landscape (your guide will choose the camp so the scenery will depend on where they take you on this day).

After lunch, your guide gradually leads the safari back toward the lodge, arriving between 15:30 pm and 16:00 pm.

The rest of the afternoon is yours and you can take a refreshing swim, sit in the shade of a tree reliving the day’s sightings, or make the most of your air conditioned room.

In the evening there’ll be a delicious dinner after which you can settle in for a peaceful night surrounded by the soul stirring sounds of the African bush.

Day 3: Full Day Panorama Tour

The day begins with a steaming hot breakfast at the lodge at 7:30 am.

Leaving behind the hot and humid Kruger Park and travelling to the cool, misty mountains of the Northern Drakensberg, this day is filled with spectacular scenery as you make your way along the Panorama Route.

Your guide will collect you at around 8:00 am in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle and in just a short and scenic 45-minute drive from Hazyview, you’ll be in the Panorama Route. You’ll be doing quite a lot of walking today so pack a jacket and lace up your most comfortable walking shoes.

Along with seeing the vistas of God’s Window, the rock formations of Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the mighty Blyde River Canyon, the third-largest canyon on the planet, you’ll also see the thunderous Lisbon Falls, marvel at the iconic 3 Rondavels, and spend time in the quirky but welcoming town of Graskop, famous for its pancakes and for often being shrouded in the clouds.

Around midday, you’ll stop in Graskop for a leisurely lunch (at your own expense). If you’re craving a hearty meal, a sweet local treat, or a bit of souvenir shopping, this town never disappoints.

By around 16:00 pm, you’ll return to the lodge, just in time to relax with a drink, before enjoying a delicious dinner.

Day 4: Morning Safari and Return to Johannesburg

Your final morning in the bush begins again before sunrise, one of the most rewarding times to be out in the Kruger.

As the faint first light stretches across the savannah, we set off from the lodge in search of the park’s most elusive predators and any other wildlife you’ve not yet seen.

Early mornings will give you the best chance to spot lion and leopard on the move, as they take advantage of the cool air before the heat of the day sets in.

After a couple of hours of searching the plains, riverbeds, and thickets, we pause for a quick breakfast and coffee break, just long enough to refuel before we continue deeper into the wilderness, on this final stretch of your safari.

We return to the lodge at around midday, giving you time to freshen up, gather your belongings, and say goodbye to your guide.

At approximately 12:30 pm, the shuttle will collect you from the lodge for the scenic return trip to Johannesburg.

You’ll arrive at the OR Tambo shuttle terminal, or at lodges within a 5 km radius, between 17:00 pm and 18:00 pm, leaving you relaxed, unrushed, and filled with the memories of your Kruger experience.
