As the intensity of the afternoon heat begins to relent, your guide will collect you and you’ll travel to some of the best routes in the Southern Kruger National Park.
With detailed updates on the day’s earlier wildlife sightings and an intuitive knowledge that only comes from years of experience, we head directly toward the most promising areas, increasing your chances of encountering all sorts of exciting game.
In the hotter hours of the afternoon, thirsty animals gravitate toward rivers and waterholes.
These areas often provide some of the best sightings of the day like elephants playfully splashing in the shallows, buffalo cooling off in thick mud, and antelope gathering cautiously along the banks.
Watching an elephant herd drench themselves in the warm light of late afternoon is a moment many guests will never forget.
Your guide will make time for short stops, giving you enough time to grab a snack or cold drink, or have a quick browse at a curio shop.
Much later in the afternoon, as the sun dips lower and the heat breaks completely, the park becomes wildly active once again.
This time of the day is one of the finest windows for spotting plains game and predators as they stir from the shade and begin to move about.
We will leave the Kruger just before the gates close and drop you off at your lodge.
Because afternoons can still be surprisingly warm, even in the winter months, we suggest packing sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, and a hat. Winter guests should bring an extra layer, a thick jacket or blanket, for the cooler return drive, while summer visitors should pack a lightweight rain jacket in case of afternoon showers.
