Today’s tour will take you to some of the most iconic and breathtaking sites of the Panorama Route, including God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Blyde River Canyon (the world’s third-largest canyon), Lisbon Waterfalls, the Three Rondavels, and the charming town of Graskop.
The day begins with a hearty hot breakfast at the lodge at 7:00 am. At 8:00 am, your guide will meet you, and you’ll set off in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle.
The Panorama Route starts approximately 45 minutes from Hazyview. As we ascend nearly 1,000 meters into the magnificent Northern Drakensberg Mountain Range, you’ll notice a significant temperature drop, so be sure to bring a jacket and comfortable walking shoes for the day’s explorations.
Our first stop is God’s Window, a stunning viewpoint offering panoramic vistas from a 1,000-meter-high escarpment. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Kruger and beyond. Reaching the lookout points requires walking along paths and trails through a lush natural rainforest, taking about 15–20 minutes for the average person. The effort is well worth it, as the views are unforgettable.
Next, we visit Bourke’s Luck Potholes, a fascinating natural rock formation created by water erosion over centuries. Located at the confluence of the Treur and Blyde Rivers, these round carvings in red sandstone are a sight to behold. Small footbridges allow you to explore the area, with views of the flowing water and a few small but picturesque waterfalls. Your guide will share the history of the region as you enjoy this unique landscape. This stop includes a short 1 km walk and approximately one hour to explore.
Our journey continues to the Blyde River Canyon, the third-largest canyon in the world. This 40 km long and 1,200-meter-deep canyon is home to diverse plant life, winding rivers, and dams. From a high lookout point, you’ll also see the famous Three Rondavels, rock formations resembling traditional African round huts, standing prominently in the landscape.
We then visit Lisbon Waterfalls, a stunning year-round waterfall with a strong flow that is sure to impress.
For lunch, we stop in the quaint town of Graskop, known for its delicious pancakes. The lunch venue will be a popular pancake restaurant, and you’ll also have time to browse the local shops and explore the town at your leisure.
After a full day of exploring, we return to the lodge around 4:00 pm. You’ll have time to unwind with a drink, enjoy a refreshing swim, and indulge in a hearty dinner. Prepare for an early start the following day for the final morning safari of your trip.
Day 4: Morning Safari and Return to Johannesburg (Breakfast Included)
The final day of our adventure begins with an early morning safari, setting off from the lodge before sunrise. You’ll enjoy a packed breakfast at one of the rest camps or picnic spots in the park. Our guide will prioritize finding any wildlife we may have missed during previous game drives, with a particular focus on spotting lions and leopards, as these elusive predators are most active during the early morning hours. With Kruger National Park boasting 148 mammal species and over 500 bird species, there will be plenty of opportunities to capture memorable moments and stunning photographs.
After a quick coffee and breakfast break, we’ll continue exploring the park before returning to the lodge at approximately 12:00 PM. Here, you’ll have time to say farewell to your guide and freshen up before beginning your journey back to Johannesburg. The shuttle will depart around 12:30 PM, arriving at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo shuttle terminal or accommodations within a 5 km radius of the airport between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
Important Note: Guests flying out of OR Tambo International Airport on the final day of the safari should schedule flights no earlier than 8:00 PM for domestic travel and 9:00 PM for international departures.
