Morning

Dawn in the African bush doesn’t wait for anyone.
Between 5:30 and 6:00 am we sweep through the town, picking up guests still rubbing sleep from their eyes.

If you’re coming from farther afield, we’ll meet you at Perry’s Bridge Trading Post or directly at Numbi or Phabeni Gate, whichever is most convenient for you.

Our morning safaris are timed perfectly. The moment the park gates open, we’re through and for the next five golden hours we drive various roads in the southern reaches of the Kruger, hoping to see predators and much more.

We’ll drift along quiet loops, pause at hilltop lookouts, and spend time at waterholes.

By mid-morning, we’ll pull into a shady picnic spot or a rest camp, if one is in the area, for a lodge pre-packed breakfast and a walk.

By 11:30 the sun is climbing high and the park starts to warm up, limiting the amount of wildlife we’ll see.

We’ll leave the park and drop you at your lodge, with a camera full of photos and stories you’ll be telling for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shared Morning Safaris

Why are morning safaris so popular?

Early-morning game drives are often considered the most rewarding because animals are far more active before the day warms up. Big predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and even wild dogs, tend to move, hunt, or patrol at first light, giving you a far better chance of seeing them in action. The soft golden light of sunrise also makes visibility clearer and photography far more flattering, creating ideal conditions for sightings in the Kruger National Park.

What time do the Kruger National Park gates open?

Gate opening times change with the seasons, but morning drives usually start the moment the gates open, right at sunrise. In the summer months, entry points typically open from around 05:30, while in winter the times shift a little later, usually to 06:00. For the most accurate opening times for gates like Phabeni and Numbi, it’s always best to check the latest updates on the SANParks website.

Is it better to do a morning safari or an afternoon one?

Both offer memorable experiences, but if your priority is spotting predators or active wildlife, the morning wins. Cooler temperatures mean animals are still on the move. Afternoon safaris, on the other hand, are wonderful for relaxed viewing around waterholes, rich colours, and spectacular sunsets. Still, most seasoned travellers agree that mornings provide the best overall wildlife activity.

How long does a morning safari in Kruger usually last?

Most morning safaris run for about 6–7 hours. Drives generally begin between 05:30 and 06:00 and include plenty of time for wildlife viewing, a comfort stop, and a break at a picnic site where guests can enjoy their packed breakfast. Typically, you’ll return to your lodge by late morning, around 11:30.

What’s included in a standard morning safari tour?

Safaris departing from Hazyview usually include a seat on an open 4×4 game-viewing vehicle, a pre-packed breakfast, bottled water, conservation or entry fees (depending on nationality), and return transfers from lodges within a 5 km radius or from Perry’s Bridge. Each tour is led by a knowledgeable guide who focuses on exploring the wildlife-rich southern reaches of the Kruger National Park.
