Day 1: Kayamandi Township > Betty’s Bay Penguins > Clarence Drive > Hermanus

Travel Time: ±3.5 hrs / ±200 km

Your 2-day adventure starts with an afternoon pickup from your accommodation in either Cape Town or Stellenbosch.

As the city fades behind you, the landscape changes from city skylines to rolling vineyards and mountain valleys, a most fitting welcome the scenic Overberg region.

The first stop is Kayamandi Township, where you’re invited into a local Xhosa home for a heartfelt cultural encounter.

You’ll sip on warm rooibos tea, nibble on golden Magwinya (vetkoek), and, if you enjoy spices, fall in love with the bold flavours of chakalaka, as your host shares stories, traditions, and the spirit of the community.

Next, you’ll be enjoying some wildlife viewing when you travel to Betty’s Bay at the Stony Point Penguin Colony. Here, you’ll be charmed by African penguins in their natural habitat, waddling about the rocks, and you might even spot rock hyraxes basking in the sun. It’s a dream for animal lovers and an ideal setting for snapping a couple of photos.

From here, you’ll cruise along the iconic Clarence Drive (road conditions permitting), a stunning coastal road with dramatic cliffs and endless sea views that seem to await around every bend.

You’ll reach Hermanus just in time for a sunset stroll along one of its famous cliffside pathways. If you’re travelling between June and November, be sure to keep your eyes on the ocean as the southern right whales often breach just offshore during these months.

Your evening winds down with a stay at a stylish 4-star boutique hotel like Harbour House (Skyroom) or similar, where you’ll fall asleep to the calming rhythm of ocean waves.

Day 2: Big Cat Sanctuary Visit + Your Choice: Ziplining or Market & Hike

Travel Time: ±3 hrs / ±150 km

You’ll start your morning with a delicious, invigorating breakfast before you head to the Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary, a non-profit haven for rescued big cats.

At the haven, you’ll learn the inspiring stories about the lions, leopards, tigers, and caracals who call this sanctuary home, and gain insight into Panthera’s mission to promote ethical wildlife tourism and conservation.

Afterwards, the tour heads toward Elgin, where you’ll have the chance to choose your own kind of adventure:

Option 1: Elgin Zipline Adventure (Optional – Extra Cost)

You can fly high above the Elgin Valley on a heart-pounding zipline canopy tour. After a 4×4 drive up into the mountains, you’ll zip across 13 platforms, with some lines stretching up to 320 metres. Along the way, your highly experienced guide will share fascinating facts about the local ecosystem, geology, and plant life.

Option 2: Elgin Market Visit + Mountain Walk

If you’re in the mood for something more relaxed, you can instead visit the Elgin Railway Market, which is hosted in a refurbished 1940s train station and is always bustling with local food, craft stalls, and live music. After browsing the market, you can enjoy a gentle nature walk in the Hottentots Holland Mountains, soaking in fresh air and sweeping views of the countryside.

Your two-day coastal escape ends with a scenic return drive to Cape Town, arriving back in the city between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, depending on traffic and your final drop-off location.
