Day 2: Full Day Open Vehicle Safari

The day starts bright and early with your first game drive.

You’ll meet your guide and before the sun is fully up, you’ll drive into the Kruger National Park. An early morning game drive will give you some of the most magnificent and fulfilling sightings. Your guide knows the best routes to take and they’ll keep a look out for animal tracks and other signs.

About 3 hours into the drive, you’ll stop at a rest camp or picnic spot for a breakfast, which will be packed and provided by the lodge. We then continue with the game drive, going into various Kruger eco-zones in search of animals. We tour the Southern Kruger, an area of rivers, grasslands, and waterholes, all of which are a magnet for wildlife like the Big 5.

We then stop at around noon for lunch (on your own account) at a rest camp. While stretching your legs, you can browse the shops to look for souvenirs.

After lunch, we take a slow drive back to the lodge. We’ll arrive at around 16:00 pm and you’ll have time to relax before dinner.

After about three hours on the road, we stop awhile for a relaxed breakfast break.

We then continue the drive, going along new routes, until lunchtime, when we’ll stop at a rest camp to relax a while before we gradually make our way back to the lodge.

Frequently Asked Questions

3 Night Self-Drive Umbhaba Eco Lodge Safari

What time do Kruger Park safaris usually start?

Most guided Kruger safaris begin before sunrise, typically between 4:30 and 5:30 am, depending on the season. Early departures increase your chances of spotting predators and other wildlife that are most active during the cooler morning hours.

What animals are most active during early-morning Kruger safaris?

Early mornings in the Kruger are prime time for predators. Lions, hyenas, and leopards often move, hunt, or patrol their territories before the heat sets in. You’re also likely to spot elephants, buffalo, and antelope grazing in the soft morning light. Bird activity is especially high at this time as well.

What should I bring on a full-day open vehicle safari in the Kruger National Park?

Open vehicles provide excellent visibility, but the sun and wind can be strong, so being prepared makes the day more enjoyable.
For a comfortable full-day safari, bring along essentials such as:

  • A light jacket
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
  • A camera or binoculars
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Snacks
  • Any personal medication

Are guided safaris better than self-drive safaris in the Kruger National Park?

Both options have their unique advantages, but guided are known for giving travellers a richer experience. Professional guides know the best routes, seasonal animal behaviour, and the best viewing areas, significantly increasing your chances of memorable sightings. They also handle all driving and navigation, allowing guests to relax and focus on wildlife. Self-drive safaris will give you flexibility and privacy but require more preparation, park knowledge, and attention to the road rules and safety.

What makes guided safaris with Kurt Safari different from other operators?

Kurt Safari is consistently rated as one of the top Tripadvisor-approved safari operators in the Kruger. Our guides are highly trained, experienced, and passionate about wildlife, and they go above and beyond to ensure safe, informative, and enjoyable game drives. We focus our route planning based on seasons, animal movement patterns, and daily conditions to give our guests the best possible sightings from our comfortable, open safari vehicles.
