Your day begins early as you meet your guide and enter the Kruger National Park just before sunrise, which is one of the best times for wildlife activity.

Morning safaris are known for having exceptional sightings, and your experienced guide will follow carefully chosen routes while tracking animal movement and looking for signs of wildlife in the bush.

After approximately 3 hours, you’ll stop at a picnic spot or rest camp to enjoy a packed breakfast provided by the lodge.

The safari then continues through a variety of Southern Kruger ecosystems, including rivers, open plains, and waterholes, all areas well-known for being the territory of the Big Five and other iconic species.

Frequently Asked Questions

2 Night Self-Drive Umbhaba Eco Lodge Safari

What time do Kruger Park safaris usually start?

Most guided Kruger safaris begin before sunrise, generally between 4:30 am and 5:30 am depending on the season. Early starts give you the best chances of seeing wildlife that is most active during the cooler hours.

What animals are most active during early-morning Kruger safaris?

Early mornings are the best times to see game such as lions, hyenas, and leopards. Elephants, buffalo, and various antelope species are also commonly seen grazing, while birdlife is particularly active at dawn.

What should I bring on a full-day open vehicle safari in the Kruger National Park?

Open vehicles allow excellent visibility, but weather conditions can vary. Recommended items include:

  • A light jacket
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Camera or binoculars
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Snacks
  • Any personal medication

Are guided safaris better than self-drive safaris in the Kruger National Park?

Both have their advantages. Guided safaris include expert knowledge, improved wildlife spotting, and a relaxed experience where guests can focus entirely on the bush. Self-drive safaris provide flexibility and independence but require more planning, park knowledge, and attention to safety rules.

What makes guided safaris with Kurt Safari different from other operators?

Kurt Safari is consistently rated among the top safari operators in the Kruger. Our guides are highly trained, passionate, and experienced, changing routes daily based on seasonal conditions and animal movement to maximise sightings. Guests enjoy safe, informative, and memorable game drives in comfortable open safari vehicles.
